“Come Together” Lyrics- Beatles
“Come Together” is a song, played by the Beatles, an English rock band. The song had been written by John Winston Ono Lennon and was credited to Lennon-McCartney. The song had been recorded from 21 July to 30 July on 1969 at Abbey Road Studios, London. The song “Come Together” had been released on 6 October 1969 in US as an opening track at the band’s eleventh studio album “Abbey Road” and was also released as a single. In UK, the song “Come Together” was released on 31 October 1969.
Timothy Francis Leary, an American psychologist, requested the band to write a song for his campaign and the slogan of his campaign was “Come together”, join the party”, then John Lennon wrote the song.
John Lennon had written the song but when he played the song, Paul McCartney felt that the song was quite similar to the hit song “You Can’t Touch Me”, sang by Chuck Berry. Then John Lennon and Paul tried to alter the song for changing the tempo and baseline of that song.
Morris Levy, who was the owner of Big Seven Music and was also the publisher of the song “You Can’t Touch Me” that was performed by Chuck Berry which was released in 1956 from the movie “Rock Rock Rock”. In late 1969, Morris Levy filed a lawsuit against John Lennon due to the similarities between the two songs - “Come Together” and “You Can’t Touch Me”. In the song “You Can’t Touch Me”, Chuck Berry had sang “Here come a flat-top/He was movin’ up with me” and in the song “Come Together”, John Lennon sang “Here come old flat-top/He come groovin’ up slowly”.
In 1973, this case had been settled out of court and John Lennon and Morris Levy had eventually reached an agreement that Lennon would have to record three songs for his next album that would be owned by Levy. Another version of "Ya Ya" and "You Can't Catch Me" were released on Lennon's 1975 album Rock 'n' Roll, a collection of rock and roll songs from the 1950s. The third song Angel Baby was never released and another lawsuit was filed by Levy for breach of contract so Levy was eventually awarded $6,795.
A few years later, Levi released an album called Roots, in which Levy used material tapes of Lennon which were in Levy's possession so Lennon took Levy back to court and Lennon won $84,912.96 in that judgement.
After being released, the song “Come Together” had reached on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and stayed on it for 16 weeks and then the song reached number one position and it also reached number fourth position in UK.
