The song was written by Austin Post, Shayaa Abraham-Joseph, Louis Bell, Miles Ale, Jo-Vaughn Virginie Scott, Olufunmibi Awoshiley and the producers were Olufunmibi Awoshiley and Louis Bell. On September 15, 2017, the song “Rockstar” was released through Republic Records, as the lead single from Malone's second studio album Beerbongs & Bentleys. 

An unofficial track’s audio was released on YouTube by Republic Records. The official music video of the song “Rockstar” was also released on 21 November 2017, on Post Malone’s Vevo YouTube channel. The video was directed by Emil Nava which received over 780 million views as of December 2020. An unofficial Crankdat remix of the song was released on 29 December 2017, on YouTube and a Latin remix of the song “Rockstar” was also released. 

The song “Rockstar” reached at the top position on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed eight weeks but knocked off by Ed Sheeran’ “Perfect”. The song received 8x Platinum certification in the US for selling over 8 million copies in 2019. The song “Rockstar” received nomination for Record of the Year and Best Rap/Sung Performance at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards. 

The song “Rockstar” reached at the top position in several countries like Canada, Sweden, Portugal, Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Finland and United Kingdom. The song also reached the number one in New Zealand and also on the ARIA Singles Chart in Australia. The song “Rockstar” became the second song with 2 billion streams on the Spotify, first was Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You”.
